What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a titanium screw placed into the bone, supported by a crown. Implants can also help stabilize dentures, both partial (some teeth missing) and complete (all teeth missing) and can be used to replace missing teeth without using adjacent teeth as anchors.
Dental implants have been used as a treatment option for missing teeth since the 1970s. They remain a popular choice for a number of reasons. Once combined with a dental restoration, they closely resemble natural teeth. Since dental implants are surgically placed, you may never need to get them removed unless there is a serious emergency. They are also mostly made of titanium and are designed to last a lifetime with proper care.
Whether you are missing one tooth or several teeth, dental implants may be able to help restore your smile. Request a consultation with our dental team to learn more.
Why Would I Need An Implant?
Have you lost a tooth due to an accident or injury? You might want to consider dental implants as a treatment option as missing teeth can make it difficult to chew or speak properly. Your teeth are also responsible for helping keep your jaw bone healthy. When you chew, it creates continual pressure that stimulates the jaw bone. If you've lost some of your teeth and can no longer chew effectively, your jaw bone will begin to break down gradually.
The Dental Implant Process
First, we analyze your dental profile and assess the condition of your teeth. This allows us to create a personalized treatment plan based on the current state of your oral health and the desired outcome.
We then conduct X-rays and diagnostic tests to evaluate the number of teeth that need treatments like dental implants. The healing time after the surgical insertion of implants can take approximately three to nine months.
Once healing is complete, your dentist will attach a dental restoration such as a crown or denture to the implant. Depending on the level of comfort required during the restoration procedure, your dentist may provide anesthesia or sedation.
